Affordable Makeup: Summer Edition

Having been one of those girls that has worn makeup everyday from the moment she was allowed to in middle school to now, makeup has definitely cost me a pretty penny throughout my life. Drugstore makeup has been quite the journey for me as I was never the kind of person to spend all my hard earned money on one product that was outrageously expensive. Instead, I did things the hard way and tried almost every product that cosmopolitan or seventeen magazine suggested for me with little success in finding products that actually worked for me. With so many talented YouTubers and beauty gurus on the internet, it is easier now than ever to experiment with makeup as many makeup tutorials and reviews are available and are mostly unbiased real opinions opposed to sponsored content that offers little advice or help at all. I know I am not a beauty guru, but I am an experienced makeup shopper and would like to share my good experiences with certain products that I stand by that are equally as nice on my face as they are to my bank account.

Summer is an especially hard time makeup wise because one never wants to look too cakey or oily when the sun is beating down and you are sweating an obscene amount. So, without further ado here are beauty products that work for me during the summer time leaving me feeling fresh and ready for whatever the day has in store.

Moisturizer: My go to moisturizer is this Olay Complete All Day UV Moisturizer with SPF 15 for sensitive skin. It is also a good primer when you are in a hurry and not looking forward to the whole process of doing a full face.

Primer: My absolute go-to primer that gets the job done and keeps my T-zone from getting too oily throughout the day is this NYX Shine Killer primer. Highly recommend for all of you with oil prone skin to get a primer that has a matte finish instead of something dewy to keep those oils on your skin at bay.

BB Cream: The ultimate secret to avoid cakey makeup in the summer is to use a light BB cream with good coverage instead of a heavy matte foundation. This trick will save your skin and give you all the effects of a foundation without things getting bad later in the day when fine lines and wrinkles start peeping through you favorite winter foundation. I was suggested to use this specific NYX BB Cream by a good friend and have fallen in love with it’s light feel on my skin.

Concealer: Another tip when it comes to the base of your makeup routine is that once you use your BB cream you might find yourself craving some more coverage and that is when concealer comes in and you can use this to bring that coverage back. This very inexpensive Wet n Wild Photo Focus concealer is one of my new favorites and I was pleasantly surprised when I tried it because it is medium coverage and lightweight. Highly recommend trying it out.

Setting Powder: Now, once you have blended out your B.B. cream and concealer it is time to set it all in place and in order to make sure your skin stays glowy throughout the day is to only apply the setting powder where you don’t want to be glowy. So, only apply it to your T-zone and underneath your eyes. Don’t do the whole baking thing because you guaranteed will crease and cake up. Just don’t do it. This Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder highlights your under eye and sets it all in one.

Bronzer: This suggestion isn’t very cheap, but it is by far the best bronzer I have ever used so I am making an exception for this one. The Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer smells absolutely amazing and applies like a dream. Best bronzer ever. Drop the mic.

Blush: If I am going for a glowy bronze goddess look I will skip blush, but the days when I need more color I go for the Milani Rose Blush. It is prettier in person and gives your cheeks the perfect touch of color without being too chalky.

Highlighter: This very popular inexpensive highlighter stole my heart the minute I saw Jeffree Star approve it on his YouTube channel. The Wet n Wild Megaglo Highlighting Powder will make you wonder why people spend so much money on blinding highlighter when these are available at your local drugstore. It is buildable, blinding and glows to the gods for only $5!

Eyebrows: Everyone has their own personal eyebrow routine so I am not going to suggest any products here because no matter what if you use a powder, pencil or pomade, just make sure to set it with some eye brow gel so that they stay in place when you and your friends are riding down some highway windows down on a summer day blasting your favorite tunes.

Eyeshadow: This small compact palette will get you through the summer with its warm tones for a shimmery eye. It is very pigmented and not too powdery. They blend nice and have some beautiful orangey undertones. It is perfect for travel because of its small size.

Mascara: My tried and true mascara recommendation is the Colossal mascara by Maybelline. Trust me when I say it is waterproof and gives your lashes that extra volume when you are going for the ‘natural’ makeup look. I guarantee you can go swimming with this stuff and as long as you don’t rub your eyes it will not come off easy.

Lips: What you put on your lips in the summer is up to you, but matte formulas I have found are not comfortable when you are eating lots of ice cream, hot dogs, hamburgers and greasy foods that will mess up your lipstick so easily in the summer. So I would opt for a moisturizing lip balm or chapstick with a tint or a lip gloss that won’t be too sticky. Another wonderful recommendation from the same friend who suggested the B.B. cream and bronzer saved my life with this lip oil by Ulta. It is tinted and gives you the perfect summer shine and I have fallen in love with this lip formula.

No matter what your summer makeup routine is, the main thing to keep in mind is that you shouldn’t spend too much time on your makeup because when the sun is out and it is a beautiful day, just have fun in it. Don’t spend all your time inside perfecting the perfect wing eyeliner. Just enjoy your summer and don’t worry about how your face is looking because who knows when a spontaneous trip to the beach will be! Just prepare for anything with this simple makeup look and keep the tips and tricks in mind. Hope you are having a good summer everyone!

I absolutely love the NYX BB cream! I use it almost everyday and I love that it covers just enough without being too full-coverage and weighing my skin down.

I’ve had my eye on the Nyx shine killer primer for a while, seems like an amazing product, especially for the summer months considering I have super oily skin due to the heat! Great post!
